Discworld Elysium Masterpost
Since I can’t edit polls to retroactively link parts together, here’s a masterpost of them all, updated as it happens.
Vote to solve a thrilling mystery of assassination and intrigue, or at least to eventually discover if the body in front of you is actually dead or not, that bit has been taking us a while.
PART 6 active poll
wanted to do another quick top 10 reads in review before the end of the year! time has been melting together the last couple years and i’d like to put these down so i have a fresh start going into 2023.
so here again, in no particular order, are a bunch of books, graphic novels, manga that i read or am currently reading!
Look Back by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Really sweet, really poignant one shot by the Chainsaw Man mangaka that hurt my heart. A story about growth, art, and why we do it.
Step By Bloody Step by Si Spurrier. My most anticipated comic that I followed this year (snagged the first issue and the rest in book format). Art was gorgeously done by Matias Bergara, whose work I totally loved on Coda. A four issue series with no written words.
Never Open It by Ken Niimura. A graphic novel retelling and reexamination of three classic Japanese folk tales. It asks why these rules should be followed and who makes them. Lovely style, I loved the black, white and red.
When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo. The second tale in The Singing Hills Cycle following the cleric Chih on their journey to archive stories and folk tales. A beautiful little novella about tales within tales with super solid queer writing. The first one, The Empress of Salt and Fortune, was also fantastic.
Hercule Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie. I’ve been slowly reading through a number of Christie’s and had to pick this one up when I saw it at the store. I’ll have to hunt down the David Suchet adaptation…
The Girl From the Other Side by Nagabe. A manga I picked up the other year and finally finished. Beautiful art, beautiful story, really looking forward to watching the anime movie. I’ve also picked up two of the mangaka’s other one shots, her art is so awesome ahhhhh
Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama. One of only two! (right now at least haha) manga that I am currently following. Honestly god- tier art and very well thought writing and themes. Behind the magic there is a lot of discussion of ‘talent’ and 'gatekeeping’, 'hope’ and 'despair’.
The Way of the Househusband by Kousuke Oono. Hilarious slice of life and the perfect humor to fill the void after the Yakuza games punch you in the feelings. Absolutely loved the live action Japanese adaptation (which stars Soma and Ayabe for Yakuza Judgment fans haha)
The Tangleroot Palace by Marjorie Liu. A collection of dark fantasy shorts written by the author of the Monstress comics focused largely on women. Still working my way through this one, I especially loved her retelling of Sleeping Beauty.
Atomic Habits by James Clear. Saw this one on the display table at the bookstore and picked it up for the new year. A refreshing take on habits and behavior and learning how your brain works. Lots of good perspectives and an easy read.
I’ve already stocked up on some new books (and have some old ones that need finishing orz orz). Lemme know what books you’re checking out! I was catching up on sci fi the other year and this year felt more fantasy skewed. Here’s to 2023!
Your top 10 games at this moment!
yesssss
YESSSSSSS
ok in no particular order and played or currently being played!
Disco Elysium The Final Cut! outstanding writing and phenomenal voice acting, a real special game that is worthy of all the hype. my tip would be to go in as blind as possible, it really is one of a kind.
Splatoon 3! i got splatoon 2 the start of this year??? early last year?? so really at the tail end of its lifecycle and i have been loving playing splatoon 3 from the beginning with all my frens. i have sunk a ton of time into casual, ranked and salmon run and these little ink kids make me so happy.
Signalis! super awesome indie game that 100% nails the classic survival horror. a scifi analogue future with androids and key cards and resident evil and silent hill in its blood. loved all the puzzles and it has a fantastic moody soundtrack. if you’ve wanted an old RE game or silent hill check out this one out.
Muse Dash! a really deceptively simple two button rhythm game that has a surprising amount of depth, really easy to pick up and put down. super cute art design and new songs are constantly being added. also waifus.
Elden Ring! it was really good! had so many organic jaw dropping moments that came from exploration alone, a super solid refinement of all the soulsborne (and sekiro) games that came before it. i had a blast theory crafting with my friend as we slowly pieced together the breadcrumbs of lore. can’t wait to new game plus once the dlc is out.
Yakuza (Kiwami 1 & 2)! my friend sucked me into the yakuza series the other year with Y0 and now im playing catch up. really fun games, really fun stories, really fun combat. yeah. insanely pumped for Ishin next year hahaha majima as okita? that’s genius.
Hollow Knight! finally picked up this one just the other week and im loving the art and the world. i finished metroid dread right before it so im not too rusty but its def a kick your ass kind of game. silksong trailer looks gorgeous so fingers crossed i can beat hollow knight before that comes out haha.
Inscryption! another awesome one to go in as blind as possible on. a spooky rogue-like deck building game with some puzzle room elements. fantastic vibes all around and really addictive mechanics. will def be replaying this one and having another go at finding all its secrets.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition! played this one earlier in the year (finally!), i’d watched friends play it a bunch at college back in the day but never played them myself until now. ended up going pretty vanilla (paragon, liara romance) and had a lot of fun being the galaxies’ most helpful person. happy i got around to playing this one through and the added dlc were just as fun and charming as the main game.
Potionomics! still playing this one! a super appealing deck-management sim game that my friends made! im so freaking proud of them and if this sounds up your alley please go check it out! i love all the character designs and animations and i swear one day i will draw some proper fanart orz orz.
and that’s 10! had fun narrowing it down, 2022 was a really good year overall (and spring 2023 is already looking STUFFED). what games is everyone playing or looking forward to?
